Interview With Fashion Designer Ira Lysa

Hi there, my dear fashion lovers! Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a fabulous fashion designer? Why tailoring is the unsung superhero of the fashion world?

Picture provided by Ira Lysa

Same here. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿค”

Sure, I can handle a sewing machine. I’ve even created a few things I was almost proud of. Ok, I admit, I was very proud of them. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž✨

However, mending clothes, replacing zippers or hemming trousers? Honestly, I’d rather design a dramatic new cape than fix a button. Repairs just don’t spark joy (unless we’re talking about watching someone else do them). ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿงท๐Ÿ™…‍♀️

Luckily, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Ira Lysa, a true pro in the world of fashion. She’s the founder of Imperial Alterations, Ira’s Bridal Studio, and her own label iralysa.com. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ›️

With over 15 years of experience as a fashion designer and master of all things tailoring, Ira turns fabric into fairy tales. Especially if you’re a bride-to-be or someone who just wants their clothes to actually fit. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ‘ฐ๐Ÿงต

A colleague of mine once swore that some mischievous gnomes had snuck into his wardrobe at night and shrunk all his clothes. ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ‘•

To be honest. I believed him—because it’s happened to me too. One day, your favorite trousers fit like a glove, and the next they scream in protest when you try to zip them up. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘–๐Ÿ“‰

Either I’m growing or those gnomes are working overtime. Thankfully, people like Ira Lysa exist to bring peace between humans and rebellious garments. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿค๐Ÿงต

In this interview, she shares her journey, her secrets to a perfect fit, and why every stitch tells a story (a very well-dressed one). ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“

What is your name, function and the company you work for?

My name is Ira Lysa. I’m a fashion designer and the founder of Imperial Alterations, Ira’s Bridal Studio, and the fashion brand iralysa.

How old are you?

I'm in my 30s.

What kind of work do you do, or what are you studying to be?

I’m a fashion designer and expert tailor with over 15 years of experience. I specialize in bespoke alterations, bridal wear, and custom fashion design.

What made you decide to become a Fashion Designer? Tell me about your journey.

My venture into fashion came from the desire and need to achieve best the craftsmanship and the covering people themselves with clothing.

I have always been fortunate enough to find tailoring and having an eye for elegance so I started my own brand from scratch. After years I helped my self along towards a combination of technical skill and a vision infused design quite a lot to aid people in feeling confident and beautiful pendant throughout necessity in their apparel.

Is fashion important to you? Why?

It makes people bring out the best of them in terms of confidence. To me, it is more of an art; a functional piece of creation that ought to be beautiful but serve a real aim in aiding people’s daily affairs and streamline lives.

Picture provided by Ira Lysa

What are your successes, and how did you achieve them?

Some of my proudest successes are launching my own fashion label, building a reputable bridal studio, and establishing a beloved tailoring shop.

All of these successes came from paying attention to detail and focusing on quality, listening to clients and their needs, and having high standards in everything I do: materials, service, and everything in-between.

What’s something you might want to do in the future?

I would love to expand the reach of my brand globally and start a ready-to-wear collection that combines luxury tailoring with the ease of casual wear.

Is the name of the Brand important to you when you buy clothing or jewelry?

Not always. It is more about craftsmanship, fit, and design. A name has its weight, yes, but what matters most is the quality that stems from it.

Describe your personal style of fashion.

My style is elegant, refined, and tailored, yet with a modern twist. I appreciate classic shapes with low-key, yet bold, statement designs that put focus into the details rather than shouting for attention.

How did you find your personal style? Do you have a signature look?

After years of working hands-on with fabrics, client shapes, and real clients, I developed a style that marries structure and femininity. My signature features clean lines, luxurious textiles, and sharp tailoring.

Do you have an influence on other people’s fashion style?

Yes, especially through my bridal designs and alterations. Clients often seek me out for styling advice, and I have had the pleasure to assist many women with defining and refining their style.

Picture provided by Ira Lysa

What are in your eyes the best trends at the moment?

The resurgence of craftsmanship is something I appreciate—the love of handwork, sustainable materials, and timeless tailoring are all things I relish seeing right now.

What are in your eyes the worst trends at the moment?

I do not like fast fashion that compromises quality and ethics for quick production. Also, overly trendy ones that are just fads lacking depth.

What kind of fashion advice would you give us?

Invest in fit. Even the basics can appear opulent with proper fitting. Tailor your clothes when needed and avoid following trends; instead, cultivate a wardrobe that resonates with your identity.

Who is your style icon, and why?

I admire women like Carolina Herrera. For her timeless elegance and attention to details. She personifies classic style with poise and strength.

Is there something else you would like to share with us?

Bear in mind: dress code should give you wings, not clip your wings. No matter if it’s your wedding dress or your daily clothing, it should enhance your being and make you shine at your best.”

Interview With Jewelry Designer Rhiannon Sara Evans

Hi there, my jewelry-fanatics! Ever wondered how a jewelry designer can fall head over heels for Celtic jewelry—and end up creating a whole new tradition of her own? While we’re at it, can ancient art actually hijack your career plans and make you swap science for sparkle? Spoiler alert: yes, it can. ๐Ÿ˜„ ✨๐Ÿ’

Picture provided by Rhiannon Sara Evans

Now, I may not  have any Welsh ancestry (unless tea cravings count), but Wales has a special place in my heart. ๐Ÿ˜Š

My father fell in love with the country during our very first family holiday. Me, my parents, and my two sisters packed into one car, with questionable map-reading skills and an appetite for castles. ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿ—บ️๐Ÿฐ

I was around eleven when we visited the famous village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ“

Did I pronounce it correctly on the first try? Absolutely not. Still, I was determined, and after a fair amount of tongue-twisting and giggling, I learned it. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ‘…๐ŸŽฏ

Now, after all these years, I can still rattle it off like a local tour guide with a caffeine buzz. ๐Ÿ˜Ž ☕๐Ÿ“ฃ

When I came across the story of Rhiannon—a brilliant jewelry designer whose life changed course after a single encounter with Ancient Celtic art—I couldn’t help but smile. ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ€

She didn’t just admire Celtic jewelry; she dove headfirst into the tradition and made it her mission to carry it forward. ๐Ÿคฉ ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ› ️

From opening a small shop in Tregaron in 1971 to becoming a celebrated name in Welsh Gold, Rhiannon’s journey is nothing short of magical. ๐Ÿฅฐ ๐Ÿ…✨

In this blog post, I had the pleasure of interviewing her. Get ready for a sparkling tale of creativity, culture, and Celtic pride—with just the right amount of gold dust. ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŒŸ

Picture provided by Rhiannon Sara Evans

What is your name, function and the company you work for?

Rhiannon Sara Evans, company Rhiannon Jewellery

How old are you?

77

What kind of work do you do, or what are you studying to be?

Jewelry designer and maker (for over 50 years!)

What made you decide to become a Jewelry Designer? Tell me about your journey.

Although my academic education was in biological sciences (I have a PhD), I had always been interested in art and crafts, and I turned to that side of things in order to be able to live and work in rural Wales.

It all started with a Craft Design Centre, established way back in 1971, commissioning and selling the very best of craft products made in Wales. We did this with an emphasis on Welsh history, language and culture.

Then, in the early 1970’s I happened to visit an exhibition of Ancient Celtic Art at the Hayward Gallery in London. That was a turning point in my life! The artifacts on display were making a strong impression on the many international visitors there, most of whom found them rather mysterious and perhaps a bit scary, but to me they seemed familiar and representative of the legends and folklore I had grown up with.

Here was a whole tradition of “ethnic” art which was our own - once ancient British but now Welsh, because most of Britain had lost its original language and in doing so had not maintained its connection with the ancient myths and legends which were a part of my natural heritage and inheritance when I was growing up.

I wanted to continue making new designs in this tradition, so I set about teaching myself to work in metal and make items of jewelry in the Celtic style. I had no interest in copying ancient designs, but wanted to make new things with similar purpose and meaning. One of our early advertising slogans was that our work was ‘part of the living Celtic tradition’.

Is fashion important to you? Why?

No, I don’t follow popular trends. It is part of who we are that our Celtic heritage and culture is incredibly deep and long lived. We still make some of my very first designs and they are still popular fifty years since they were first launched.

I laugh when I see the volume jewelry and fashion brands describe their fleeting designs as ‘timeless’ - they have no idea what this really means!

It is also the case that some ancient designs still feel incredibly contemporary – our Snowdon Cat design was inspired by a pot handle discovered on the slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and it has an incredibly modern look and feel to it. It has also consistently been a bestseller even though the design concept is two thousand years old.

For me, and for many of my customers, our jewelry has a deeper value beyond fashion. I would be more than happy if everyone just chose one Rhiannon piece that was right for them and simply wore it every day for decades (I know of many people who do this).

It is for this reason that we introduced our policy of replacing worn out pieces for half the current retail price – after forty years of constant wear, even our very well made and handmade items can wear out.

We also do this for those who have accidentally damaged their cherished and loved piece of Rhiannon jewelry (and we have seen all kinds of things over the years, including items that have been accidentally driven over, crushed in various ways, or exposed to chemicals that have eaten into the metal and caused items to essentially fall apart).

Picture provided by Rhiannon Sara Evans

What are your successes, and how did you achieve them?

The Craft Design Centre was a success from the beginning. It was very different from anything that had been seen before (this was the 1970’s).  Wales was then full of highly skilled craft makers, “hippies” and “drop-outs” moving into the country for a better life! As a result the quality of products we offered was outstanding and prices were significantly lower than in London.

When I started making jewelry I found myself in the right place at the right time. Worldwide interest in Celtic Art was increasing rapidly and I soon became one of a small group of Celtic artists who were known to each other and who exchanged ideas, mainly in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but also in America and Europe.

The Craft Centre developed into an internationally known Celtic Design Centre, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and I met a host of interesting people.

In 1986 I started working in Welsh Gold and became one of only three goldsmiths licenced to buy and use gold from the North Wales mines.

Production only lasted for about 5 years, but my combination of innovative design and this rare metal made Tregaron a destination location for a  visitors. A grant from the Wales Tourist Board enabled us to develop a purpose built jewelry shop and workshop within the craft centre, and over the next few years the Welsh Gold Centre took over and overshadowed the crafts speciality.

This was before the internet, when customers had to physically visit; things have changed now and Tregaron is a quiet little town again, suffering badly in the wake of the pandemic and changing behaviors since the lock-down that came with it.

Whilst many of our sales are digital it is only when you can see our handmade work in person that it becomes obvious how much higher the standard and quality of what we produce is relative to the majority of other brands and high street jewelers.

It is a feature of our work that it never looks as good in a photograph as in real life. Whereas I often observe that most branded jewelry looks far better in promotional material than when you actually see it in the flesh!

What’s something you might want to do in the future?

Produce some new designs and perhaps do some writing. I don’t have that much future left personally, but I always like to realize new ideas. My son is keen to open a new Rhiannon store in the centre of Cardiff and is trying to raise new investment for this right now.

It will be wonderful if he succeeds as this will bring the work to our customers and a new audience. Successful new outlets will allow us to grow our workshops here in the heart of Wales and I will have the opportunity to pass on my skills to a whole new generation whilst keeping work and opportunity here in our small, rural community.

Is the name of the Brand important to you when you buy clothing or jewelry?

No, not at all. Quality is what counts - ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ has always been true. I would rather buy something which I know will last and which will serve me well for a long time. I am very much against throwaway fashion and the throwaway lifestyles many of us have developed – it is incredibly wasteful.

Describe your personal style of fashion?

Casual, colorful, comfortable. Some of the children and grandchildren may even say, eccentric!

How did you find your personal style? Do you have a signature look?

For most of my life I have made my own clothes, or recycled and adapted existing items. Perhaps on occasions I have had a “signature look” in other people’s eyes, but not at present in my old age!

Picture provided by Rhiannon Sara Evans

Do you have an influence on other people’s fashion style?

No, I don’t think so. Perhaps my grandchildren will be influenced by their memories of me and by my design work in the future.

What are in your eyes the best trends at the moment?

Natural fabrics (wool, cotton, bamboo and so on) Buying vintage and second hand. Recycling fabrics.

Some of these trends have gone full circle but we can hope, that as the world realises it is slowly exhausting its resources, living our lives sustainably will become the cultural norm for all of us.

What are in your eyes the worst trends at the moment?

Synthetic short-life clothing. Use of non-recyclable plastics, glitter, sequins, branded tags – things that are essentially indestructible and which have a short lifespan of utility. What do we do with these things once they’re tired and jaded?

What kind of fashion advice would you give us?

Buy quality, buy to last. Avoid cheap throw-away dressing. Think hard about the residual value of what you buy (in every sense) - it is worth spending more today to know that your children and grandchildren may still have something not only as a valuable item in itself but as an heirloom vested with much deeper and more important family meaning.

Who is your style icon and why?

My grand-daughter Arianwen – she has a wild and wonderful approach to style!

Is there something else you would like to share with us?

Precious metal jewelry often has sentimental value, and my work is often described as classic, iconic, or even talismanic. They are made to last and many have by now been passed on to a second and third generation.

Some of my earlier pieces have been almost worn out and brought back for repair or replacement, while others have been lost only for the same design to be bought again by owners. This has made me strengthen some designs in order to ensure they last a lifetime.

My work is relatively expensive, we can’t compete on price with lightweight, fashion jewelry. Today, at a time when precious metals are steadily increasing in price, I understand the imperative for large volume jeweler to cheapen production and be as frugal as they can with materials.

But for us this has never been an option, if you build it to last it must have substance and we believe that Rhiannon is for life, not just for Christmas!

Picture provided by Rhiannon Sara Evans

Alright, dear readers, if you’ve ever felt like your life needed a bit more sparkle (and not just on your fingers), let Rhiannon’s story be your Celtic compass. Trust your instincts, follow that creative itch, and don’t be afraid to swap science for stardust—or spreadsheets for silver! Sometimes the boldest moves lead to the most beautiful legacies. ๐Ÿ˜‰✨๐Ÿ”จ

How to Choose the Right Clothing Fabric - What Clothing Labels Are Really Telling You

Hi there, my wonderful fashion lovers! Have you ever wondered how to choose the right Clothing Fabric when shopping online? Or maybe you’ve stared at a Clothing Label and thought, "What on earth does this feel like?"

Ever had that moment while online shopping? You spot a gorgeous dress that looks like it could change your complete personality (in a good way). ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘—✨

Then you scroll down to the Clothing Label, and it says: “65% polyester, 35% viscose.” You’re wondering… “Is that going to feel like a silky dream or like a portable sauna?” ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ›️

Yep, that’s the challenge. Such a shame, when shopping online, we can’t reach through the screen and feel the Clothing Fabric (someone, please invent that already!). ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿคท‍♀️๐Ÿ’ป

Alas, that’s why we’re left trying to decode Clothing Labels like textile detectives, hoping we can figure out what those fabric names mean. ๐Ÿ•ต️‍♀️๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿงต

Let’s be honest, most of us weren’t born knowing the difference between modal, lyocell, and rayon. They sound more like characters from a futuristic Netflix show. ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ’ซ

I used to be exactly the same. I knew little about which fabrics were comfy or not. I just ordered things without thinking too much about it. Hm, overthinking is overrated, right? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿ’‍♀️

Oh my, when I think of the time I ordered a dress that looked stunning online, but the fabric? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ‘—๐Ÿ™„

Let’s just say it wasn’t love at first touch. It made my hair stand on end, and I swear my skin was filing a formal complaint as soon as I touched it. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿ˜ณ

That’s why I’ve put together this handy guide to the most common Clothing Fabrics you’ll encounter on Clothing Labels—because decoding fabric shouldn’t feel like a mystery movie. ๐Ÿ•ต️‍♀️๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿ”

I’ll break down how they feel, how they behave in the wash (some may shrink into oblivion), and whether they’re eco-friendly (or more "throwaway fashion" than Mother Nature would approve of). ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ˜‰

All with a healthy dose of humor, because shopping should be fun—even if your top is 90% mystery fiber. ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ‘š๐ŸŒฑ

Picture made by Seadbeady

1. Cotton

Ah, cotton—the Beyoncรฉ of fabrics. Natural, breathable, and everywhere.

Behavior:

Soft, strong, but can shrink if you wash it hot or abuse it in the dryer. Luckily, there are pre-shrunk and mercerized versions that stay a little more stable.

Sustainability:

Regular cotton needs a ton of water and pesticides. Opt for organic cotton instead—it’s kinder to the planet and your armpits.

2. Polyester

The Terminator of textiles - it doesn’t wrinkle, barely wears out, and dries faster than your apologies.

Behavior:

Super strong, but loves to trap sweat. And it melts if you iron it like you’re in a cooking competition.

Sustainability:

Made from petroleum and doesn’t break down in nature. However, recycled polyester (like from PET bottles) is becoming more common and way more eco-friendly.

Picture made by Seadbeady

3. Viscose (Rayon)

Soft, drapey, and a little bit of a drama queen.

Behavior:

Feels like silk but needs to be treated like royalty—wash on a gentle cycle, no wringing, no crumpling it up in a ball.

Sustainability:

Made from wood pulp, but often processed with chemicals that aren’t great for the environment. Look for certifications like LENZING™ for a greener version.

4. Modal

Viscose, but with a glow-up.

Behavior:

Stronger, less likely to shrink, and feels like a cloud on your skin. Great for underwear, loungewear, and anything with a chill vibe.

Sustainability:

Produced more sustainably than regular viscose, especially when it’s from Europe (again, check for LENZING™!).

Picture made by Seadbeady

5. Lyocell (TENCEL™)

The eco-queen. Made from eucalyptus and processed in a closed-loop system (hello, eco-friendly!).

Behavior:

Super soft, breathable, and wrinkles less than linen. Perfect for blouses, dresses, or looking fabulous without sweating.

Sustainability:

Very high. Biodegradable, made from fast-growing trees, and environmentally conscious. Give this one a standing ovation.

6. Acrylic

Fake wool, but without the itch.

Behavior:

Warm, light, but oh boy, it pills quickly. And watch out for fire—it melts faster than a candle in the sun.

Sustainability:

Bad news—acrylic is plastic and doesn’t break down easily. So if you buy it, wear it a lot and wash it with love (or at least in a laundry bag).

Picture made by Seadbeady

7. Polyamide (Nylon)

Strong, flexible, and sporty.

Behavior:

Dries quickly, great for sportswear and swimsuits. Can get a bit sweaty in the heat, but hey, that’s what deodorant is for.

Sustainability:

Not exactly eco-friendly unless you go for recycled nylon, like from old fishing nets. (Yup, mermaid vibes.)

8. Wool

Warm, breathable, and self-cleaning. Yep, wool is basically the Marie Kondo of fabrics.

Behavior:

Shrinks if you wash it hot, so be careful. But with proper care, it lasts for years.

Sustainability:

Natural fiber, biodegradable, and if produced ethically (think: mulesing-free), you’re showing some love to the sheep too.

Picture made by Seadbeady

9. Linen

Summer in fabric form. Fresh, airy, and with that instant "I woke up like this" look.

Behavior:

Wrinkles. Always. But that’s stylish, right? Wrinkles are linen’s love language.

Sustainability:

Very eco-friendly! Made from flax, requires little water, and grows even in poor soil. Vintage, but with a modern flair.

10. Elastane (Spandex, Lycra®)

The hidden power behind your favorite pair of jeans.

Behavior:

Stretchy, but sensitive to heat. Small amounts (1-5%) make a huge difference in comfort.

Sustainability:

Synthetic and hard to recycle. But without it, your jeans would suffocate your legs, so… balance.

Picture made by Seadbeady

11. Silk

Pure luxury. Shiny, smooth, and feels like giving your skin an upgrade.

Behavior:

Soft, breathable, but delicate. Keep it away from the washing machine unless you want drama.

Sustainability:

Natural material, but the production process isn’t always animal-friendly. Look for peace silk or recycled silk for a gentler conscience.

12. Bamboo

From panda’s favorite food to your soft underwear.

Behavior:

Light, breathable, soft, and antibacterial. Perfect for hot days or people who sweat easily.

Sustainability:

Sounds very green (bamboo grows super fast), but the fiber is often chemically processed. Look for bamboo linen (eco-friendly) or bamboo viscose (less eco).

13. Hemp

The underdog with superpowers.

Behavior:

Strong, breathable, and gets softer the more you wear it. Really that “the more you wear me, the more you’ll love me” type.

Sustainability:

High score! Grows without pesticides, needs little water, and improves soil quality. Sustainability award? Yes, please.

14. Fabric Blends (Mixes)

Cotton-poly, viscose-elastane, wool-acrylic... you name it.

Behavior:

Blends combine the best (and sometimes the worst) of both worlds. For example, you get the comfort of cotton AND the wrinkle resistance of polyester. Win-win, as long as the blend is well-made.

Sustainability:

Harder to recycle since different fibers are tough to separate. But blends can sometimes extend the lifespan of a garment, which is a bit more sustainable.
