The name Halloween is derived from Hallow-e'en, or All Hallows Eve, the night before All Hallows, November the 1st. In the Celtic calendar the year started on the first of November, so on October 31 they celebrated New Year's Eve. The Celts believed that on that day the ghost of those who died in the past year would come back and take possession of the living. They would put food in front of their doors to attract the spirits. But they wore masks to ward off evil spirits.
