Interview with Jewelry Designer Maria Glezelli

Hi There..... Do you like to shop for jewelry? Perhaps you are a jewelry designer and like to make your own pieces?

I like to make jewelry myself, but enjoy shopping for it just as much. When I first started bead working I mostly made patterns designed by others, but nowadays I often make the patterns myself. 😃

Just like last weekend, you can occasionally find me on a market, but that's maybe once or twice a year to sell a few pieces so that I can buy myself some new beads to keep on beading. 😀

Even though my body doesn't agree with these markets, I can't help it, I am a seedbeadaholic. Ah yes, I made the first step, admitting that I have a problem. 😏

The next step is taking action. I am not that far yet, even though I am totally in for cold turkey, it's lovely with a nice salad on the side. 😋

Perhaps the 31-year-old jewelry designer Maria Glezelli understands that it's not that easy to just stop making jewelry. Let's see what she has to say. 😍

What are your name, function, and the company you work for?

My name is Maria Glezelli and I am a Jewellery Designer and Founder of my own Jewellery brand www.mariaglezelli.com, a "company of one" focusing on completely handmade and sustainable jewelry with the purpose of empowering women to be proud of their origins and value their heritage.

What kind of work do you do, or what are you studying to be?

I am working in the intersection between fashion and jewelry, and my biggest secret is that all pieces are entirely made by hand by using a traditional knitting technique, without the use of any machinery.

What made you decide to become a Jewelry Designer?

When I was 5 years old, I realized I wanted to become an artist. I used to spend hours learning new crafts, drawing, and creating many things from decorations to gifts.

Later, a special person, my grandmother taught me how to knit and that memory has always accompanied me throughout my journey. I spent a lot of time in theatres, museums, and art spaces and I like to think that they somehow nurtured my creativity.

Is fashion important to you? Why?

One of my biggest dreams was to create a business like a couture house, where I could design different body adornments made with my signature technique.

I had always had a strong respect for fashion-forward designers like Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier who pushed the boundaries of fashion by creating provocative, avant-garde pieces.

In my work, I want to explore the intersection between traditional craftsmanship and fashion, challenging the sometimes conservative world of high-end jewelry.

What are your successes, and how did you achieve them?

I founded my business two years ago during the pandemic. At the moment, you can find my products at Jewelstreet, 1st Dibs, Aureusboutique, and a few other international boutiques.

I have had some fantastic collaborations with a few artists that contributed significantly to the development of the brand. To achieve all these, I worked hard. But what matters most is that I always push myself no matter the setbacks or difficulties.

Is the name of the Brand important to you when you buy clothing?

Not really. As a designer, what matters most to me is quality and sustainability. I care about the story behind the product, the people who created it, and the impact that it has on the planet.

Describe your personal style of clothing?

My style can vary from casual to elegant. I always choose pieces that express my personality or my mood. What is most important for me is to feel comfortable and confident in the outfit I choose.

How did you find your personal style? Do you have a signature look?

With a lot of experimentation and observation. I love red, black, and white as colors which I usually combine to create a signature look for a special occasion.

Do you have an influence on other people’s clothing style?

As a designer, I always enjoy offering my advice on styling. Most of my friends will often seek my opinion when they are looking to buy a new outfit.

What are in your eyes the best trends at the moment?

I love the vibrant, bold colors and patterns that are currently in fashion.

What are in your eyes the worst trends at the moment?

I don’t like the thick chains you can find everywhere from a piece of jewelry to a pair of shoes.

What kind of fashion advice would you give us?

Following trends will never help you showcase your authenticity. Wear pieces that are chosen carefully by you, and combine them in your own way to match your needs and your mood is the best piece of advice I could give you.

Who is your style icon and why?

I admire every piece that Alexander McQueen brought to life. His originality and provocative thinking changed the way fashion is made.

Is there something else you would like to share with us?

I am currently working on some innovative pieces that will be part of a new collection. My plans also include the development of a body accessory exclusive collection for those who are in love with my designs and would like to enjoy extravagant pieces made on a bigger scale.
