The Best Tips on Cleaning Jewelry and how to store Jewelry

Hi There..... Would you like some tips on cleaning jewelry and how to store jewelry?

Since jewelry is an important part of fashion, I thought you might be interested. After all, cleaning jewelry and knowing how to store jewelry is very important to make those stunning pieces last longer. 😃

I used to make lots of beadwork jewelry myself but had to close my Etsy shop because it wasn't profitable enough. At the moment, I am more into knitting and some occasional sewing if my body feels like it. 😏

My first cardigan isn't done yet, and I am already working on another. Ah, yes, why would you finish something if you already have wool for the next one? 😁

No, I couldn't finish the first one because I didn't have enough wool. 😵

Now I am waiting for some other wool I ordered already to come back into stock so that I don't have to drive to the shop twice. Yes, I can think clearly still at my age. I just turned 58 yesterday, way too close to 60, if you ask me. 😱

The thought of that makes my hair stand on end, so let's talk about other things like cleaning jewelry, for instance. I've had some help from Irina Kharina, the owner of Tsarina Gems, who is an expert in this field. 😊

Without regular cleaning, diamonds and gemstones in your jewelry can start looking dull and less lively. But that's easy to fix! Warm water and a few drops of dish soap or hand soap is the safest way to clean your jewelry. 😉

Reserve a soft, clean toothbrush specifically for cleaning your jewelry. Do not use an electric toothbrush! Avoid toothpaste. It is too abrasive and hardens like glue under gemstones, making it very difficult to remove. 😧

Here are the 5 steps for cleaning jewelry

1. Take a bowl, fill it up with warm water and add a couple of drops of soap.
2. Place one piece of jewelry in the bowl and leave to soak for a couple of minutes.
3. Scrub gently with a toothbrush.
4. Rinse.
5. Pat dry with a lint-free cloth. I don't recommend using paper towels, they can scratch the metal.

Pro Tip: Avoid cleaning your jewelry anywhere close to an open drain. Irina has heard some very unfortunate stories involving rings flying down the sink and into the drain!

Dish soap is the best option for cleaning jewelry. However, if you decide to invest in a jewelry cleaning solution, visit your local jeweler for advice and purchase the correct product for your specific jewelry needs. They don't make all jewelry cleaners equal. With such a vast variety of jewelry cleaners available, you do not want to cause more harm than good. Follow instructions carefully!

Pearl Jewelry

Pearls, like other gemstones and jewelry, need occasional TLC. Lotions, perfume, hair sprays, and natural skin oils can stick to the pearls and make them look tired and dull. But don’t just chuck them into your at-home cleaning solution!

There is a lot of misinformation about pearl cleaning and there is no need for a deep clean! Giving your pearl necklace, ring, or earrings a gentle wipe with a soft cloth will do the trick and will keep your heirlooms shining like new!

Jewelry Care tips

Remove your jewelry when exercising, baking, gardening, or doing household chores, especially involving harsh chemicals. This will help keep your jewelry safe and damage-free for years to come.

Take off your jewelry while having a shower. Shampoo, conditioner, and shower gels can get stuck in those delicate designs even under running water. You also don’t want to lose an earring or necklace if it comes undone and falls down the drain.

How to store jewelry

A jewelry box is the safest place to keep your jewelry. You could also have little ring dishes dotted around the house, in case you want to take your jewelry off and have peace of mind that they will be safe from getting lost.
